I saw the same issue, also on gentoo (no patches being applied via the
ebuild though). For years, I have monitoraspect=16:9 set in
my .mplayer/config. All of the sudden with SVN, 16:9 videos play
windowed as what I'm assuming is 4:3, and fullscreen as 4:3 with black
bars on the sides.

Removing monitoraspect fixed it for me.
