You probably have to tell us what kind of GPU (and OS and distribution in case
of Linux) you use to get an answer.

I don't think "-vo xv" supports dropping back to anything else.

That is exactly what you should try to avoid:
x11 also is very slow (slower than sdl, I'd guess), I don't think there still is
any usable hardware that needs it.
