Are you talking about "--enable-runtime-cpudetection"?
AFAIK it is buggy and nobody know how to fix it.

It is because MPlayer is in permanent state of building/fixing.
There's no one who have time and willingness to make stable build to
point to it and say: "there is, use this".
So, instead, if MPlayer not working as you want, tell about it to
developers and compile newest source available - most of the cases it
will be fixed.

So what's the problem. Can't /usr/local directory be located on liveCD
as image and mounted form it to filesystem?
MPlayer can be installed there (it is by default when you don't change
it in configure).
If you can install shared libraries on USB and normally use it can't you
do it with MPlayer?
As for using FFMPEG shared libraries in MPlayer I think right now it
could be a really problematic change for devs. Until codecs and formats
will be moved from MPlayer itself to FFMPEG it can't be done i think.
