DISPLAY=remote:0.0 gmplayer
Should work in POSIX-compatible shells.
So there's only rarely a reason to use -display.

Could be considered a bug, but if it works for displaying the GUI on one
and the video on another display it should probably rather be considered
a feature that needs better documentation.
