[MPlayer-users] When do I *have to* update MPlayer?

If you're not a bare bones type of guy who likes to figure things out on
his own,  then go with another version.

Follow the instructions on the home page to download the source using
subversion. And then run configure.
Configure will use the git program to clone the ffmpeg repository. If you
need further instructions on what
libraries you need to use, what development files are necessary, etc. Then
I would suggest you use Ubuntu
or something similar that is easier for the end user to keep up to date
with the current versions of mplayer.

If you aren't the adventurous type or the type that wants to live on the
cutting edge, then I would not suggest using
Slackware. Personally, I like Slackware. But then again I learned how to
use Linux on an m68k Mac.
