The best (and easiest) way to deal with this is to force a custom
fontconfig configuration file for mplayer to exclude the windows system
fonts folder. Then fontconfig won't scan the system folder, which
should make scanning very fast. Maybe fontconfig should still get
access to a small collection of common fonts, though.

libass absolutely won't work without fontconfig.
