Mencoder is about an additional > 7000 lines of code.
It is that code that is no longer properly maintained.
Though as you can see I might still find time sometimes,
it is just that ffmpeg is a transcoding tool with lots of
features and a lot more manpower and a lot of shared developers,
which overall makes mencoder a bit of a lost cause and pushing
people towards ffmpeg is simply the most reasonable long-term
strategy.
I don't really see a chance of ffplay becoming a usable replacement
for MPlayer anytime soon, plus on a more personal level MPlayer
contains some parts I actually have an interest in, so that
is a different situation.
