I own a GoPro myself, so I know it is USB. However you say that mplayer
idents the camera, but cannot connect. I fail to see how this is mplayer
related as recognision of the device should be handled by the
OS/distro/desktop

When I plugin my GoPro Hero3, I get in messages:

I can then mount the device or have it mounted or let it automount or do
whatever I desire. Once it is mounted, I can run any program, including
mplayer.

That is the reason for my question: what are you trying to do? Are you
just trying to get to the files? Then I would think this is not mplayer
related. Or are you trying to use it like a webcam e.g. get livestream
from it over USB instead of over wireless?
