Using -demuxer lavf works for me with the current MPlayer:

$ ~/Software/mplayer/mplayer -demuxer lavf -playlist http://dir.xiph.org/listen/1467960/listen.m3u

With the older MPlayer from Ubuntu 14.04 and -demuxer lavf I get a short
burst of noise, followed by silence and "Cache empty" messages:

Cache empty, consider increasing -cache and/or -cache-min. [performance issue]

For full output see below.

Jim, you can consider opening a bug report with Debian (or Raspbian?) for
this issue, but I would not expect a timely resolution. I am using
self-built MPlayer since forever, because the versions available as
distribution packages were always outdated and very often broken.

Thanks,
Erik
