Per,
You shouldnt need to. Use the mixer to mute the input. e g.

  "aumix -i 20 -l R -l 0"

sets IGain to 20, and 'Line' to both record, and muted output.
If mute stop you recording, you may be slecting the wrong input.

How about capturing at full res? (576 line) Will need a higher bitrate, 
and de-interlace filter.
