I play most movies as:
mplayer -osdlevel 0 -nofs -vo tdfxfb -vop yuy2 -dr -nodouble movie.avi

This means that i can work in the framebuffer whilst watching the film. To blank
it, I'd use:
mplayer -osdlevel 0 -fs -vo tdfxfb -vop yuy2 -dr -double movie.avi

I also have a patch to move the movie around in the frame-buffer, so I usually
play it in the top-right, if you want this (tdfxfb-only) email me, but there
should be a new option coming soon to do it for all vo's, I believe.
