done already all of that ...

However, my SB Live! Value doesn't have the CD SPDIF connector, and
I guess that's needed to connect to the digital output of your DVD-ROM,
(am I right in this?)

Because if I follow your steps then I won't have audio for my DVDs
using XINE.

I was talking about those .avi files that were encoded with the AC3
codec and use the -ac hwac3 option with mplayer.
 
I use the OSS driver that comes with standard kernels.

More info about my sound card:
