?? If someone does not select 1280x960 but 1280x1024 as screen resolution
it should be clear that the pixels are not square. If 640x480 has the
rigt aspect ratio then 1280x1024 (640*2x480*2+64) can not have the same
aspect ratio.

Most people with 4/3 17" or 19" CRTs either use 1152x864 or 1280x960.
Both resolutions are 4/3. If they do use a 5/4 resolution on their 4/3
monitor then chances are good that the xserver knows the dimensions of
the monitor. Users of 17", 19" TFTs do not have any problems at all.
People with 20", 21",... CRTs probably know (or their administrator knows)
what they are doing (1600x1200 is very common).

If they see that the video is too wide or too small maybe they will think
about their X11 configuration??
Do you really think that all people with 5/4 CRTs, modern notbooks or 17"
and 19" TFT displays should get wrong video aspect when using the default
configuration of mplayer?

This will result in many unfavourable reviews of MPlayer.
