I eventually gave up on slave mode overall and now launch mplayer once per 
file, though I do still use slave commands for playback. This was one of the 
problems which prompted it, although what eventually did so was the 
inability to change certain audio settings, such as the pan filter, on the 
fly.

What we could really do with is an mplayer activeX control!
