Once upon a time, MPlayer did automatically detect playlists and parse
them as such. This led to broken or otherwise undesirable behaviour in
enough cases that the capability was intentionally taken out. I don't
remember any of the specifics involved, or any of the exact arguments
against keeping it, but the discussion was on the mailing lists and
could presumably be found in the archives.
