It also only really deals with AVI files. Even so, both VirtualDub and 
AVIsynth are both stupendously useful pieces of software that I use daily.

The chief frustration of this is that software like the avcodec and avformat 
libraries that mplayer uses are clearly very much better than the low level 
file I/O routines used by things like FCP and Premiere. VirtualDub is by 
comparison also incredibly fast at applying filters. I wish some of that 
speed and flexibility was available to the higher end software. Perhaps it's 
impossible to do that in software of much greater complexity, but I don't 
think it's too much of a stretch to assume that Adobe and Apple are writing 
for a saleable feature set, as opposed to performance.
